Abstract:

AlM: Pathologic diagnosis is mandatory to determine treatment modalities and prognosis of pancreatic massTHigh mortality and morbidity are burdens of wedge resection and tru-cut biopsy. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is a simple and fast diagnostic procedure with low complication rates. MATERIAL and METHOD: Eighty four FNAB slides from 79 patients were examined at SSK Tepecik Teaching Hospital Pathology Laboratory betwen 1992-1999. Sixty two were ultrasound guided percutanous and 22 intraoperative aspirations. FINDINGS: Fifty six cases were clinico-pathologically confirmed; spesifity, sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) were 100%, 91.6 % and 100% respectively. There were no significant difference of spesifity, sensitivity or PPV between the diagnotic procedures percutanous or intraoperative aspirations. CONCLUSION: Major advantages of FNAB are lower cost unnecessity of hospitalization, low complication and high accurecy rates in pathologic diagnosis.
