Abstract:

One of the crucial indicators of sportive performance can be explained by the mental state of the athletes during the competition. Negative thoughts created by the influence of negative experiences of the athletes in the past can cause them to remain well below the desired performance level. Coping with these negative thoughts, defined as rumination, can be possible by identifying and overcoming them. This study aims to adapt the sports competition rumination scale to Turkish and to conduct validity and reliability studies since there is no measurement tool to measure rumination in the sports environment in the sports science literature. One hundred fifty athletes, including individual and team athletes, participated in this research. Language validity, construct validity, content validity, and divergent and convergent validity processes were applied for the validity analysis of the scale. In addition, Cronbach alpha, composite reliability coefficient, Guttman split-half, item discrimination index, and item-total correlation processes were used for the scale's reliability. Accordingly, results show that the scale has a sound and reliable structure. Finally, this determines that the sports competition rumination scale, adapted to Turkish culture, is suitable for measuring ruminative thoughts, thought to be crucial in the performances of the athletes who compete, after the validity and reliability processes are done.
