Women's Perception of Maternal Attachment and Their Views on Motherhood

Abstract:

Objective: Women's maternal attachment perception have influenced their views on motherhood. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted between March 15, 2015 and December 30, 2016 in a women's maternity hospital in Istanbul. The universe of the study, all women who normally delivered in this hospital, the sample consisted of 610 mothers who agreed to participate in the survey and met the sampling criteria. In the collection of research data, a form developed using the literature and "Maternal Attachment Scale" (MAS) was used. The data were evaluated in a computer environment. Results: The average age of the mothers was 27,24 ± 5,59 years, 15,4% of them were working and 10% of them were tired and stressed, 16,3% of them were lower than their incomes and 14,8% were found to be partially or completely inadequate, and 3.4% had a psychological problem requiring assistance. It was determined that 37.7% of women were pregnant with their first pregnancy, 79.8% had planned planned pregnancies, 14.1% received education or counseling during their pregnancy, 16.7% had serious problems in pregnancy, 17%, It was determined that 4 of them had a problem with their baby or their baby at birth, 64.4% of them had breast-fed their baby within the first thirty minutes. The relationship between mother's education level, income perception, stress status, maternal working style, pregnancy birth and postpartum anxiety, traditional practice, parenting education, maternal role influence, and Maternal Attachment Scale mean score were significant (p <0.05). There was no difference between maternal age, planning of pregnancy, preexperience of mother and social support incapacity perception of maternal role, and maternal attachment scale point average (p> 0,05). Conclusions and Recommendations: It was determined that the relationship between the presence of a problem with the mother's level of education, working status, income perception, stress status, pregnancy, birth or postnatal status, traditional practices, parenting education, maternal role influence and Maternal Attachment Scale averages was significant. In the direction of the results, we suggest the development of individualized solution proposals by determining mother-infant attachment, factors affecting the role of motherhood negatively, opinions and behaviors.
