Abstract:

This study identifies the methods and techniques for effective and efficient language teaching in a language class intended for those who are new to learning French as a foreign language and examines the reflections of students on the in-class and out-of-class approaches that can make the student more effective and efficient in choosing these methods and techniques. For this purpose, this study administered a survey to the pre-service teachers at the Department of French Language Education of the Faculty of Education at Bursa Uludağ University in the last week of the fall semester of the 2011-2012 academic year. 64 of about 120 students in this department voluntarily participated in this survey consisting of the following 3 open-ended questions to express their opinions: In your opinion, 1. What methods and techniques should be used to effectively and efficiently teach French? What approaches can make the student more effective and efficient in selecting these methods and techniques in the classroom and out of the classroom? 2. What should teaching basic language skills such as speaking, reading, writing, and listening in French teaching look like? 3. How should the assessment-evaluation process, that is, exams in teaching French as a foreign language, be performed? The link to the questions (survey) designed through Google Docs was sent to the students via e-mail; they were asked to express their reflections in Turkish. This study assesses the reflections made by the students only on the first question. This qualitative study, drawing on the screening model, first analyzes these reflections by content analysis and classifies them under specific headings, then discusses them through comparison with the reflections and suggestions in the literature, concludes with the interpretation of the findings, and presents a current overview of the research subject.
