Abstract:

The aim of this study is to establish the relation between gender and culture through cinema, which is a cultural indicator tool. Based on the assumption that there is a parallelism between cultural identity and gender, the study has tried to comparatively read the cultural and patriarchal structure in Turkey and South Korea, the status of being a woman in both countries, and the phenomenon of violence against women through cinema, which is a cultural indicator and national representation area. The starting point of the research is how the construction of gender identities in Turkish and Korean cinema is a part of Turkish and Korean culture and how it is constructed discursively or symbolically. In this context, Lal Night (Reis Çelik, 2012), which is one of the last examples of New Turkish cinema that examines women, and the film Hwal (Yay, Kim Ki Duk, 2005) of South Korean cinema were examined especially by focusing on the representations of child brides and their comparative critical reading was made. Visual analysis and discourse analysis techniques were adapted to the study and movie readings were made. The reading of the films was carried out by applying visual analysis and discourse analysis methods.
