Bu araştırmanın amacı, İngiltere’deki iki dilli Türk ortaokul öğrencileri ile Türkiye’de öğrenim gören ortaokul öğrencilerinin okur öz algılarının ve okumaya yönelik tutumlarının çeşitli değişkenler açısından karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmesidir. Araştırma tarama modelinde desenlenmiştir. İngiltere’den 177, Türkiye’den ise 186 ortaokul öğrencisinin katıldığı araştırmanın evreninin belirlenmesinde kolay ulaşılabilir örnekleme yöntemi tercih edilmiştir. Araştırma verileri “Okur Öz Algılama Ölçeği” ve “Garfield Görselli 1-6. Sınıflar İçin Okumaya Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği” kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin normal dağılım göstermesi nedeniyle parametrik betimsel istatistik testlerden Anova ve Tukey testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, sınıf düzeyine göre İngiltere’deki iki dilli Türk ortaokul öğrencileri ile Türkiye’deki ortaokul öğrencilerinin okur öz algılarında anlamlı farklılık bulunduğu ve genel olarak Türkiye’deki öğrencilerin okur öz algılarının daha yüksek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Öğrencilerin okumaya yönelik tutumlarının da sınıf düzeyi açısından anlamlı düzeyde farklılaştığı ve Türkiye’deki sınıfların tamamının İngiltere’deki altıncı ve sekizinci sınıflara göre daha fazla olumlu tutuma sahip oldukları görülmüştür. Cinsiyet değişkeni açısından her iki ülkede de kız öğrencilerin okur öz algılarının erkek öğrencilerden; Türkiye’deki hem kız hem de erkek öğrencilerin İngiltere’deki kız ve erkek öğrencilerden daha yüksek okur öz algısına sahip oldukları belirlenmiştir. Benzer biçimde Türkiye’deki kız ve erkek öğrencilerin okumaya yönelik tutumlarının İngiltere’deki kız ve erkek öğrencilere göre daha yüksek olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
The aim of this study is to comparatively examine the reader self-perceptions and attitudes towards reading of bilingual Turkish secondary school students in UK and secondary school students in Turkey in terms of some variables. In this survey, the convenience sampling method has been adopted to determine the sample of the study, in which 177 secondary school students from England and 186 secondary school students from Turkey participated. The research data were collected by means of the Reading Attitude Survey with “Garfield “Pictures for 1-6th Grade Students and the Reader Self- Perception Scales. Since the data were normally distributed, the researchers used parametric tests like Anova and Tukey. As a result of the research, it has come out that there is a statistically significant difference in reader self-perceptions of secondary school students in England and Turkey as far as their grade levels are concerned, and that reader self-perceptions of students in Turkey are higher. Moreover, attitudes of students towards reading also differed significantly in terms of their grade levels and that all of the grade levels in Turkey had more positive attitudes than the sixth and eighth graders in the UK. In terms of gender, it has been determined that self-perceptions of female students in both countries is higher than that of male students, on the other hand, students in Turkey have higher self-perceptions than the students in the UK. In a similar vein, attitudes of students in Turkey towards reading are higher than that of students in England.
