In the present article we reflect on the strategies and procedures used in the digital version of el País when translating headlines from Spanish into English. We will start considering the concepts of translation techniques, translation strategies and trans- lation procedures from the point of view of different scholars, and will then proceed to specify the peculiarities of headlines discourse in general and those of English headlines in particular, from a multidisciplinary point of view, including not only a linguistic and discursive dimension but also contributions from Translation Studies and relevant methodological proposals from Translation Studies. Finally, using a series of headlines obtained from the English edition of eLpaiS.com, we will analyse the strategies followed to translate them, comparing results with strategies used when translating other types of titles, such as film titles.
