Abstract: In Turkish societies, music has always been a long-established tradition with its history dating back prehistoric times. Music hasnt only served for social and religious purposes but it has also turned into a state tradition with its use for military purposes. Accepted as the oldest Turkic resources, Köktürk Scripts, indicates that Turksve always owned a sense of military music. Kaşgarlı, in his Divan-u Lugat-it-Türk, touched upon existing military music tradition. Ottoman Janissary Band tradition initiated through Mesud II, Seljuk Emperor, who sent an independence decree dated 1286 to Osman along with a plume, flag, cymbal, table and kettledrum. Having gained importance over the years, this tradition ended in 1826 when Mahmud II abolished Janissary Corps. Based on literature review, this study highlights the military music, which marked the sign of dominance and power in Ottoman Empire like in all former Turkic States, within the framework of mehteran-ı tabl-ı alem organization.
