Abstract This is a quantitative research and aims to investigate alcohol use by adolescents, and the relations between social and personal factors. 314 students, from 14 to 18 years, of public schools in Vitória/ES/Brazil, participated in the year 2013. We used the Brazilian Youth Questionnaire that relate to the use of alcohol and that assessed personal factors like religiosity, self-efficacy and self-esteem and social factors such as relationships with family, friends and school. We performed descriptive analyses, correlation, t test and Chi square. It was found that factors associated with family and friends are related with alcohol use, in addition to personal factors, such as sex and self-efficacy. The results suggest that the family environment and the self-efficacy can be protective factors in relation to the use of alcohol in teenagers, dimensions that can be worked in prevention programs.
