İngiltere 16’ncı yy’dan itibaren Osmanlı Ortadoğu’sunda ticari imtiyazlar kazanmayı başarmış ve bölgede ekonomik ve siyasi nüfuzunu hissettirmeye başlamıştı. 18’inci yy’da sömürgesi Hindistan’da mutlak güç kazanması ile beraber bölgenin güvenliğini sağlamak ve bu bölgedeki sömürge imparatorluğunu devam ettirmek birincil önceliği olmuş ve uzun süre Hindistan’a giden yolların güvenliğini sağlayacak siyasi ve askeri hamleler yapmıştır. Bu anlamda Basra körfezi ve Mezopotamya’ya da ayrı bir önem atfetmiş ve 20’inci yy’a kadar bölgedeki nüfuzunu artırmıştır. 20’inci yy ile beraber sömürge yarışındaki kıyasıya rekabet ve Almanya’nın, bölgedeki İngiliz nüfuzunu, Osmanlı Devleti ile yakınlaşması sonucu çeşitli proje ve imtiyazlarla tehdit etmesi sonucu İngiltere farklı politikalar izlemeye başlamış bu politika değişimlerine bir de bölgedeki zengin petrol potansiyeli eklenince Mezopotamya İngiltere için vazgeçilmez bir bölge haline gelmiştir. Bu makalenin amacı İngiltere’nin 1’inci Dünya Savaşına kadar olan süreçte Mezopotamya bölgesi ve bugünkü adıyla Irak coğrafyasında izlediği politikalar ve bu politika değişimlerindeki olgu ve olayları irdelemektir.
Since the 16th century, United Kingdom succeeded in gaining commercial privileges in the Ottoman Middle East and began to make its economic and political influence felt in the region. With the gaining of absolute power in the 18th century in India, it became the first priority to ensure the security of the region and to maintain the colonial empire in this region, and made political and military moves to ensure the safety of the roads leading to India for a long time. In this sense, she also attributed a special importance to the Persian Gulf and Mesopotamia and increased her influence in the region until the 20th century. In the 20th century, as a result of the fierce competition in the colonial race and Germany's threat to the British influence in the region with various projects and concessions which were made with Ottoman Empire as a result of its rapprochement and good relations between them, UK started to follow different policies, Moreover, Since the rich oil potential in the region was added to these policy changes, Mesopotamia became an indispensable region for UK. The aim of this article is to examine the policies followed by UK in Mesopotamia region and today's Iraq geography during the period until the 1st World War and the facts and events in these policy changes.
