Abstract:

This study examines how public diplomacy is applied in self-determination movements and how these practices have an impact on the process of independence. In order to find a valid answer to this question, the work will be carried out in Catalonia, which is the current self-determination case. For this purpose, a comprehensive study of public diplomacy studies in academic literature will be conducted in the First Section, and the public diplomacy literature will be discussed in detail in the context of self-determination. The second part will focus on the extensive public diplomacy activities of the independent Catalans in the referendum process. The public diplomacy activities that Catalans carry out for self-determination are divided into two main categories: official channels and popular channels. In both categories, both individuals and institutions stand out as an important public diplomacy actor. The result section will also seek answers to the question of how effective the public diplomacy strategies implemented in the context of self-determination are, starting from the example of Catalonia.
