Abstract This paper is a commentary to an article by the Ukrainian writer, social and cultural activist Bohdan Lepkyĭ, published in Sprawy Narodowościowe in 1933. The article under discussion describes the significance of the developments of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for Ukrainian culture and national self-identification, with an emphasis on the growth and flowering of Ukrainian literature in this period. In her comments on Lepkyĭ’s article, the author focuses on present-day markers of Ukrainian cultural identity.
