Abstract:

The purpose of this research was to determine what factors nurses encounter that can cause errors during medication administration. This research was conducted between July 1 and September 30, 2005 at Turkish Health Ministry's Izmir Tepecik Training and Research Hospital Tepecik and Izmir Ataturk Training and Research Hospital Ataturk , Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital Ege and Private Kent Hospital Kent . 252 nurses from these hospitals were taken into the sample. “The Evaluation Form of Drug Administration” was used in collection of the data. It was determined that nurses generally encounter with the factors regarding the doctor orders about factors that can cause medication errors. % 69.4 of nurses stated that doctors sometimes made changes on their orders, % 41.3 of nurses stated that doctors sometimes wrote their orders legible, % 41.3 of nurses stated that doctors sometimes wrote drug doses complete and clearly etc. . It was determined that a great majority of nurses encounter with the factors which will be led to medication errors regarding the writing of the drugs charts and the records. The research results show that the source of medication errors can be nurses, physicians and pharmacists
