Abstract The study of intergenerational relationships and the complexities of the phenomenon on a global scale involves research from multidisciplinary positions where social, psychological and cultural factors are transversal axes for the analysis. It is important to conceive of socialization as the process by which the new generation is prepared to intervene in social change, to participate from the earliest stages in the reformulation of the social circumstances in which it develops its life. Older generations should be aware of the need and importance that new generations have to be able to create new solutions, taking into account the experience of their elders. It is essential to favor a climate open to participation and understanding without defensive barriers and without overprotection and paternalism. The knowledge of the contents of the social representations that are had between generations is essential to identify the issues of conflicts and the main difficulties in communication. The new reality must be accompanied by participation, health, education and care policies, both for the elderly themselves and for society.
