Özet:

Abstract The Industrial Product Design Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, in its modern name, the institution which initiated Industrial Product Design Education in Turkey, has completed half a century of life in 2021 under its official name. In this 50-year period, which began with the Industrial Design Department of UESYO in 1971, in a time when the name of Industrial Design was an unfamiliar concept in the country, the students trained by the institution came to positions that would direct the Turkish industry, had important roles in the development and settlement of industrial design and made the profession known. In line with this, a second department was established within the body of İDGSA in 1973, under the name İDGSA, Interior Architecture and Industrial Product Design Department. In accordance with a decision taken in 1981, two departments were gathered under one roof, and the one name of MSU, Faculty of Architecture, Industrial Design Department. The qualification exam system for the department was changed in 2016, and in 2020 the department was renamed to Industrial Design. Since 1971 when the department was formalized; it raised highly valuable industrial designers, its students received important awards in many international design competitions, its graduates became professionals in important domestic and global companies such as Volkswagen, Mercedes, Tofaş, Arçelik, Şişecam, Ford Otosan, Grohe, Kelebek, Çilek Mobilya, Vestel and pioneered many professional innovations. The innovative products designed by these graduates helped many companies such as Arçelik, Çilek, Arzum, etc. to become pioneers in their own fields, and achieve great success. The design works of the founding members of the department, along with the works of the graduates they raised for the design world and of the successive generations, hold an importance place in the recent design history of Turkey. The first Industrial Product Design Department, which was established in Turkey in 1971 under UESYO’s roof, laid the foundations of this profession in Turkey and gained an important place in the Turkish industry with the students it raised. The general structure of UESYO education • The goal of the institution is to design products which can be produced in the industry, • To produce projects by acting in touch with industrial organizations, • To be able to follow up-to-date technological developments thanks to ongoing relationship with the industry, • Graduate students carry design duties in industry organizations. Quite in parallel, the objectives of current department can be summarized as follows; • To direct the Turkish Industry in terms of design; to contribute to the development of theoretical research and applications, • To provide design and designer support to the Turkish industry, to closely follow global developments in order to carry new knowledge to education and industry, • To create a school which is unique in terms of industrial design education and profession. As a result of this unchanging approach to education, even after 50 years, it still remains as an institution, the graduates of which are still much sought after in the industry. The department also conducted many inter-institutional collaboration projects and is still conducting new projects. This work was shaped using the department’s archive documents, verbal and written memories of and interviews with witnesses throughout the history, as well as conferences. The objective is to utilize this documentation resources to portray the half-century journey of the department in its 50th year.
