The process of social change (the increase in communication and transportation capabilities, wars or compulsory causes, education, business etc.) As a result, especially in the 21st century, the phenomenon of migration has gained new dimensions to the discussions on social integration and harmony. Immigration, which is basically a geographical location change, means much more than the "border" change for the immigrant individual. Migrants, on the one hand, face problems of integration and harmony with the society they live, while on the other hand, they are concerned about preserving their cultural, ethnic and religious traditions. This study discussed the attitudes of Turkish immigrant families living in the United States, their attitudes regarding the raising of their children in the context of the protection of their social boundaries. The theoretical framework of the research is formed by Fredric Barth’s interactive approach, which discusses the importance of the concept of “limit” between ethnicity theories. In this context, the attitudes of immigrant families, their children to learn and transfer to the next generations of cultural, religious, traditions and religious traditions, marriage with "strangers" and family commitment, have been analyzed towards the dynamics that determine the social boundaries of the group. This study analyzed data obtained from 293 people in July-August 2018 with the survey technique of the quantum research method. When the findings are evaluated in general, the conclusion is that immigrants, at the point where the “we” and “the other” intersect, are trying to remain as “we” to protect the group borders and they are trying to feel like the country they migrated, meaning “the other”. Keywords: America, international migration, immigrants, ethnic groups, social borders.
Abstract: Immigration accelerated especially in the 21st century as a result of social change (developments in communication and transport technology, wars or necessities, such as education, work etc.) adds a new dimension to discussions about social integration and adaptation. Immigration, basically a change of geographical place, means more than a change of “boundaries” to an immigrant. While immigrants encounter integration and adaptation problems in the community they live in, they worry about preserving their own culture, ethnic identity and rituals. This study considers the attitudes of Turkish immigrants living in the US towards their children growing up in the US in the context of protecting social borders. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Fredric Barth’s interactional approach who discussed the concept of “border”. Immigrants’ attitudes towards dynamics such as their children’s process of cultural acquisition; custom and practice; ritual and teaching of the next generations; their marriage to “foreigners”; the loyalty to family, a determinant of group social borders were analysed in this context. The data were analysed following the survey technique of the quantitative research method based on 293 participants from July to August of 2018. The results depict the immigrants’ efforts to balance up retaining their group identity while developing a sense of belonging to their adoptive countries by attempting to become like the “other”. Keywords: The USA, international migration, immigrant, ethnic group, social border.
