Asthma is disease characterized by recurrent cough, wheeze and dyspnea. In this study the demographic characteristics and etiological factors related with the disease is aimed to be discussed on a group of 636 asthmatic children, retrospectively. The mean age for the patients was 5.9±3.3 years, the male/ female ratio was 1.5 and the age of disease onset was 2.5±2.5 years. Allergic rhinitis was diagnosed in 63 % of the patients and recurrent sinusitis was diagnosed in 38 % of the patients. Skin prick test was positive at least to one of the most common aeroallergens in 73 % (n=208) of the children. Sensitivity to at least one of the other allergens (animal dander, polens or yeast) was positive in 17 %. Positive reaction to yeast spors was detected in % 4, reaction to animal dander was positive 18 % and reaction to polens was positive in 15 %. No statistically significant difference was detected between atopic and nonatopic asthmatics with respect to having a positive family history of allergy or asthma (p=0.5). The asthma demographics and the ethiologic factors in children living in this region of Turkey was found to be consistent with literature from other parts of the world.
