Abstract:

The "urinal" became an iconic piece of art that turned art upside down in the 20th century. With this work, Marcel Duchamp ignored tradition and transformed the ordinary object we use daily into an art object, without recognizing any rules. The "urinal" was exhibited in 1917 by Marcel Duchamp in a gallery space. We see that the subject of "urinal" has worked as a theme by many of the Modern and Contemporary artists from the 20th century to the 21st century. The interdisciplinary use of the urinal in the field of art is also important in the 21st century. This article has different interpretations, techniques and language usage of the artists with different understandings of the same subject in different periods in the history of art in the 20-21th century. The avant-garde artist Marcel Duchamp, who dealt with the urinal as the first subject, displayed an anti-art attitude by placing his art work in a gallery space. It has been tried to be examined by many artists in terms of understanding and language differences in a wide range. The reproduction of a work has been conceptually reloaded by many artists with ironic and parodic discourse by interpreting and questioning it.
