Vitamin D is a vitamin that is soluble in fat and is synthesized as a response to sunlight. The active form is 1, 25 OH 2D. It plays an important role in bone health, serum calcium and phosphorus levels. Recent epidemiological studies have taken into account the relationship between low vitamin D levels and many diseases. Low levels of vitamin D in adults are associated with osteomalysis, autoimmune and infectious diseases, diabetes mellitus, increased risk of fall and break, cancer, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Here, new recommendations for vitamin D physiology, metabolism, deficiency and supplementation have been reviewed taking into account the new findings published in the literature.
