Tarihi süreç içerisinde tam olarak ne zaman ortaya çıktığı bilinmemekle birlikte, cüzzam hastalığının oldukça uzun bir geçmişi olduğunu söylemek mümkündür. Zira Eski Mezopotamya'nın çivi yazılarında dahi cüzzamdan bahsedildiği görülmektedir. İnsan üzerinde meydana getirdiği değişimler ve bulaşıcı bir hastalık olmasından dolayı tarih boyunca her zaman korkulan bir hastalık olan cüzzam, Ortaçağ Avrupası'nda Tanrı'nın laneti olarak görülmüştür. Uzun yıllar çaresi aranan cüzzamın Osmanlı Devleti'nde ne zaman ve nerede ortaya çıktığı hakkında kesin bir bilgi bulunmamaktadır. Bununla beraber hastalığın kuruluş dönemine rastladığı kesindir. Osmanlı Devleti, söz konusu dönemden itibaren cüzzamın yayılmasını engellemek ve cüzzamlı kişileri tedavi edebilmek için ülkenin çeşitli yerlerinde cüzzamhaneler diğer bir ifadeyle miskin tekkeleri kurmuştur. XX. yüzyılın başlarına gelindiğinde cüzzam hala bulaşıcı ve tedavisi bilinmeyen bir hastalık olduğundan Osmanlı topraklarının çeşitli yerlerinde de cüzzam vakaları görülmeye devam etmiştir. Bu çalışmada da arşiv kaynakları ışığında XX. yüzyıl başlarında Osmanlı ülkesinde görülen cüzzam hastalığı ve söz konusu süreçte Osmanlı ülkesi içinde ve dışında cüzzama karşı yapılan tıbbi çalışmalar ele alınmıştır.
