Abstract:

Reading activity holds an important place in both the mother tongue and the learning of a foreign language. Through reading, individuals learn and interact with other opinions, thoughts and cultural elements. In the study of foreign languages of individuals, some practices are recommended in order to improve their reading skills in foreign languages. One of them is a simplified book. This study aims to highlight important elements related to the use of simplified reading books made to improve reading skills in foreign language learning and to provide a critical look at the use of such books. This study first addressed the use of simplified books from a historical point of view, collected supportive and opposition views on their benefits, and finally made questions from the structural examples of simplified books and the language learning. Through simplified books, the development of the student's reading skills and foreign language learning is considered, but it is necessary to carefully approach the use of such books in foreign language learning, to review whether language acquisition as content and whether there is a cultural attitude when choosing books. In addition, it should be questioned whether there is a structural and contextual gain in foreign language learning. As a result, it is recommended to use the original and different types of literary texts suitable for each level instead of simplified literary works to develop the ability to read in a foreign language.
