Abstract:

Abstract:

Determining the factors affecting credit card expenditures of economic units is still a matter of current research. Studies have shown that besides income, variables such as confidence indices, exchange rate, and consumer price index are also psychological variables affecting periodic expenditures. Today, it is a very common practice for individuals and businesses to use credit cards for their expenses. In this study, linear and non-linear relationships between real sector confidence index, consumer confidence index, effective dollar rate and consumer price index and credit card expenditure amounts are investigated. In the study, monthly data of the relevant variables were used in the period 2014: 01-2020: 10, which also covers the COVID-19 pandemic period. In the study, linear relationships, asymmetric relationships with distributed lag autoregressive model (ARDL), nonlinear distributed lag autoregressive model (NARDL) were analyzed. According to the analysis results, a cointegration relationship between macroeconomic variables and credit card expenditure amounts has been determined, however, asymmetric relationships have been identified in the short and long term. In addition, the results obtained revealed that during the COVID-19 Pandemic period, economic activities slowed down significantly compared to other economic events and the recovery process took longer than other times.
