Abstract:

Background: The present article aims to present the focus group studies carried out to determine students’ opinions and suggestions on Problem Based Learning (PBL) method within the context of program evaluation studies. Methods: The study type is qualitative, focus group study and its universe consists of Dokuz Eylul University’s Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 students. The focus group interviews were implemented with one group from each Year and were conducted by a researcher trained on this topic who was aided by an equally trained researcher. After describing the aim and method of the study, the interviews carried out on a voluntary participation basis and recorded on tape with students’ consent approximately lasted two hours. Results: The students gave detailed answers to the questions on their general opinions on the PBL method, how they spend their independent study periods, on their PBL tutors and on their suggestions to improve the efficiency of PBL sessions. Conclusion: The presentation of students’ opinions and suggestions in relevant educational committees and their utilization to make necessary improvements within the context of program evaluation studies were planned.
