Abstract:

Analysis of dentofacial asymmetries using conventional radiographic techniques is difficult because of limited two-dimensional information about the complex hard and soft tissues. In this study, we aimed to study three-dimensional computed tomographic (3D-CT) reconstructions for surgical planning and postoperative evaluation o f patients with dentofacial asymmetry in a preliminary study. Three patients were Examined clinically and radiographically using 3D-CT at preoperative, 6 weeks and l year postoperative follow-ups. The helical scan technique was used in the CT examination and the volume rendering technique was used to create 3D-CT images. Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) was performed in the first patient and bilateral corpus osteotomy was performed in the second patient. In the third patient, bimaxillary osteotomy (bilateral SSRO+LeForte I osteotomy) were performed to correct severe dentofacial asymmetry. It was concluded that analysis of3D-CT reconstructions would provide best results for preoperative treatment planning as well as postoperative facial harmony and aesthetics.
