Abstract:

Mihail Yuryevich Lermontov, one of the important writers of 19th century Russian literature, shapes his creativity during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I, when the despotic state administration and the social pressure created by the rulers were deeply felt. The author, who harshly criticizes the brutal living conditions created by land slavery, the rulers who abused his authority, and the privileged, educated but inactive noble class in his works, in his work "Vadim", which he started to write in 1832, reflects the negativities of his period to Czarina II. It tells the reader within the framework of the Pugachev's Rebellion that took place during the Katerina period. II., which caused the gap between the noble-peasant class to deepen. Catherine's rule has staggering consequences that affect the fate of the Russian individual and society. The feeling of revenge that arises in the people who are exposed to behaviors that harm human dignity causes them to question their own destiny and revolt against the persecutor. In this context, Lermontov, who wants to show the destructive effect of the negative conditions created by the state administration on both individuals and society, uses contrasting concepts such as angel-devil, good-evil, beautiful-ugly, in his work "Vadim", and describes his heroes with a realistic perspective within the framework of romantic, abstract images. In our study II. By examining the effects of the disorders, negativities and destruction created by the Catherine administration on the individual-society, it will be examined how the individual revenge of the hero named Vadim integrates with the anger of the uprising public mass. In this context, the images used by Lermontov to explain the concepts of revenge and rebellion, the choices of the heroes between good and evil, the anger experienced by the society-individual will be tried to be examined with a descriptive method within the framework of the author's creativity and thoughts.
