Abstract:

It is accepted that the Westernization activity is started in Ottoman Empire in 17th and 18th centuries. The aim of this study is to introduce the life of Şanizade, who was born in the lands seeking change in many fields such as political, military, economic, health, education and training. In this study, Şânizâde's studies on medicine and especially his works and translations in the field of anatomy will be emphasized. Şanizade's work, called "Hamse-i Şanizade" or "Kânûn-ı Şanizâde" which is attributed as the most important study of him, had a great role in laying the foundations of modern medicine in these lands. The first volume of the work, which was prepared in five volumes, is the first anatomy book prepared in a modern sense, Mir'atü'l Ebdân Fi Teşrih-i A'za'i'l-i Insan. The reason why this book is welcomed and followed with interest by the Western medical authorities is that it is a work that constitutes the pioneer of the transition from the classical Ottoman medical understanding to modern medicine in the Ottoman geography. Şânizâde contributed to the Turkishization of medical terms by adding new terms to replace old medical terms in his works. He is among the spiritual founders of Mekteb-i Tıbbiyye, which was opened in 1827 shortly after his death.
