Kıraat, Kur’ân ilimleri içinde ayetlerin telaffuz biçimini konu edinen ve onları sahih bir yolla Hz. Peygamber’e ulaştırmayı amaçlayan bir ilim dalıdır. Kıraatlerin sıhhati için bu sahanın bilginleri tarafından “Senedinin sahih olması”, “takdiren de olsa Osman Mushaf’ına (hattı Osmânîye) uygun olması”, “bir yönüyle de olsa Arap diline uyması” şeklinde üç şart koşulmuştur. Bu makalede, tefsir ilminin önemli simalarından olan Fahreddin er-Râzî’nin (ö. 606/1210) tefsiri Mefâtîhu’l-gayb bağlamında kıraat ilmine yaklaşımı, kıraat anlayışı tespit edilmeye çalışılacaktır. Bu amaca ulaşmak için bir kıraatin kabulünde gerekli görülen sahih sened/rivayet, Mushaf’a ve Arap diline uygunluk yönüne Râzî’nin bakışı esas alınacaktır. Böylelikle müellifin yaşadığı dönem olan 13. Yüzyıla kadar kıraatlerin sıhhat şartları açısından geçirdiği farklılıklara kısmen temas edilecektir. Râzî’nin kıraate dair müstakil bir eseri yoktur. Ancak o, tefsirinde kıraat ilminden fazlasıyla istifade etmiş, ayetlerin okunuş biçimiyle ilgili ortaya çıkan kıraat farklılıklarına sık sık yer vermiştir. Râzî, kıraat yaklaşımını kelime açıklamaları esnasında ortaya koymuş, konuyla ilgili görüşlerini satır aralarına serpiştirmiştir. Bu sebeple çalışmada ağırlıklı olarak deskriptif ve tahlil yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Tefsir, Arap dili, fıkıh ve usûl-i fıkıh gibi kıraatle ilişkili ilimlerin tamamında müstakil eserleri bulunan, bu ilimlerin her birinden yararlanılarak ortaya konulan ve kıraate dair zengin bir muhtevaya sahip bir eseri kıraatler açısından incelemesi yönüyle çalışmanın özgün bir nitelik arz ettiği değerlendirilmektedir.
