İhsan Süreyya Sırma, bu eserine “İslâmî Tebliğin Medine Dönemi ve Cihad” adı vermesini, Hz. Muhammed (s.a.v.)’in hicretiyle başlayan Medine Dönemi’nin askeri cihadla yani savaşla geçmesine bağlamaktadır. Hz Muhammed (s.a.v.)’in Medine’de ki tebliğ döneminde 10 sene İslâm davası uğruna kılıç salladığını ve ölüm döşeğinde iken yaptığı en son vasiyetinde de cihada çıkılmasını emrettiğini, cihadın İslâm’ın vaz geçilmez bir ilkesi olduğunu vurgulamaktadır. Sırma cihadı, Allah’ın emrettiği gibi yaşamak için ortaya konulan tüm çaba ve mücadele olarak tarif etmektedir (s. 15). Bu çerçevede Müslüman olmayanlara İslâm’ı tebliğ etmek için yapılan savaşlar, namazı gerektiği gibi kılmak, oruç tutmak da cihat olarak görülmektedir. Kitabın önsözünde Hz. Muhammed (s.a.v.)’in Medine Dönemi’ni cihad merkezli ele alacağının mesajını veren Sırma, bu gerçeğin gizlenmeye ve saptırılmaya çalışıldığını bu araştırmayla gerçekleri ortaya çıkarma hedefinde olduğuna işaret etmektedir.
