Erzincan’ın tarihinde yaşadığı yıkıcı etkisi en büyük deprem olma özelliğine sahip 27 Aralık 1939 depreminin yaraları merkezi ve mahalli teşkilatlar tarafından beraberce uyum içinde sarılmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu depremden Erzincan’ın yanısıra 11 vilayet de etkilenmiş ve büyük kayıplar vermiştir. Depremzedelerin iaşe ve iskânı, ihtiyaç maddelerinin tedariki ve dağıtımının organizasyonunu önemli meseleler olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır. Belli başlı şehirlerde kurulan yardım komisyonları depremzedeler yararına önemli miktarda para ve insani malzeme toplamayı başarmıştır. Bu yardımların yurtiçinden olduğu gibi yurtdışından da yapıldığı tespit edilmiştir.
