Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the studies on John Dewey in accordance with the established criteria. The universe involves the studies on John Dewey. The sample consists of dissertations and theses on John Dewey written in Türkiye between 1992 and 2022 as well as articles in Turkish and English that are indexed in the ULAKBİM TR Index or DergiPark platform. The National Thesis Center of the Council of Higher Education was searched for dissertations and theses that have been performed in Türkiye, as well as the Turkish Academic Network and Information Center (ULAKBİM) TR Index and the DergiPark platform for articles. As a result of the search, 23 dissertations and theses and 57 articles were found on Dewey between 1992 and 2022. These studies were examined in terms of research type, year of publication, publication language, university where the dissertation/thesis was produced, the journal in which the article was published, study method, data collection instrument, data analysis method, and focus. The research conducted a content analysis and presented the results in tables. According to the research results, the most studies in Türkiye on Dewey were conducted in 2019. All but one of the dissertations and theses were found to have been written in Turkish, while almost half the articles were written in English. Most of the dissertations/thesis were found to have been written at Atatürk, Gazi, and Marmara Universities, while most of the articles were published in the International Journal of Progressive Education. Except for one thesis and one article, all studies were conducted using qualitative research methods. The most commonly used data collection tool in the studies was found to be document reviews and the most commonly used data analysis method to be content analysis. Regarding the topic of focus, most of the studies were found to have dealt with Dewey’s philosophy of education. In light of the research findings, it is recommended to expand the focus subject areas on Dewey's philosophy and to investigate its effects on the Turkish education system in depth.
