Abstract This work aims to investigate the influence of religiosity and spirituality in coping with the disease in people living with HIV. Interviews were carried out with 117 people who adhered to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and 37 people who did not adhere to it, in a reference hospital in infectious diseases in the city of João Pessoa - PB. The analysis was carried out using the Spiritual Religious Coping (SRCOPE) scale in its short version (14 items). The results showed that both groups make use of religious confrontations in its positive form, but the average use of negative SRCOPE strategies was higher in the non-adherence group, questioning us if it would be pertinent to focus of the spiritual dimension to increase the adherence to ART.
