Abstract:

The aim of this study is to determine the metaphorical perceptions of Science and Art Center students regarding the concept of laboratory. In the study, phenomenology pattern, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The study was carried out in the 2021-2022 academic year with 48 students studying at the level of realizing individual talents at a science and art center in Hatay. In order to realize the purpose of the study, a two-stage form was created to determine metaphors related to the concept of laboratory. In the first stage, in order to determine which metaphors the students associate the concept of laboratory with, “Laboratory ……. "like" sentences; In the second stage, "Because ..." sentences were prepared for the laboratory concept in order to explain the metaphor determined by the students, and the students were asked to complete these sentences. The link to the data collection tool created via Google Form was shared with the students and the data was collected. The answers from the students were analyzed using the content analysis method. At the end of the study, a total of 36 Metaphors were obtained. Metaphors related to the concept of laboratory are grouped into 8 categories. When the categories related to the concept of laboratory are examined, it can be seen that the metaphors most produced by Bilsem students are Kitchen, Entertainment Center, Heaven, Brain and Library. It was observed that the category Laboratory in the Meaning of Entertainment Environment (f = 8) was the category containing the most metaphors.
