Abstract:

On 1 January 2016, the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) entered into force. The fourth of these goals is quality education. One of the tools to be used to achieve the goal of quality education is education expenditures. The aim of this study is to find answer to the question of whether increasing education expenditures in Türkiye will increase the quality of education. For this purpose, firstly, the UN SDG on quality education is reviewed. Then, education expenditures for OECD is reviewed. Education expenditures in Türkiye are analyzed with OECD data and literature studies. The educational expenditure per student in Türkiye falls below the OECD average for pre-school, primary school, secondary school, and tertiary levels. However, public universities and private primary schools and secondary education institutions exceed the OECD average in terms of expenditure. It has also been observed that education expenditures have shown a consistent increase over time, except for the 2019-2020 period. Increasing educational expenditure can contribute to increasing the quality of education in Türkiye.
