Abstract:

This paper aims to investigate that Wordsworth’s status as a philosophic poet does not rest upon, “the scientific system of thought". His love for Nature throughout his childhood, his youth, and his maturity, presented the basis for his exclusive standing. Further, the paper also aims to depict that through the influence of Nature, Wordsworth was enabled to understand the unique love and compassion for mankind, which further extended to the broad understanding of the workings of man's awareness. This enlightenment made make him, in the correct logic, a true logical poet for the followers who reached him with, “a seeing eye and an understanding heart”. Thus, unfolding the history of Wordsworth's mental and spiritual aspects in the context of him as a poet of Nature and as a poet of Man, under the influence of heredity and of his physical and social environment, several elements of Wordsworth's personal psychology are revealed. His thought concerning Nature and Man makes a complete statement of his poetic and philosophic creed. Wordsworth adored and worshipped Nature, but he also loved and adored Man. He had been a poet who had experienced one of the most deadly instants of history in form of the Reign of Terror. Though, like a spirited Englishman he had enthusiastically welcomed the French Revolution as an innovative beginning for humankind, but the consequences of the revolt soon altered his radical enthusiasm and his changed spirit made him a traitor in eyes of revolutionaries. But Wordsworth was successful in disproving these charges. Hence, French Revolution turned Wordsworth into a poet of Man. Though, Wordsworth faith in the French Revolution vanished, but its influence stayed undamaged on his awareness. The Revolution refined his soul and turned him into a poet of Man. Hence, the slogan of the loveliness of Nature turned out to be the slogan of the dignity of human soul for Wordsworth.
