Abstract:

The present study sought to review teachers and students’ views on decision making skill which was included in the social studies lesson curriculum. The researchers conducted the study with the participation of nine students from grade seven and a social studies teacher in a secondary school in the center of Adıyaman during the academic year of 2019 and 2020. In determining the working group, the researchers used convenience sampling method. The researchers designed the study according to qualitative research pattern. The researchers collected the data of the study via the Teachers’ View Form and Students’ View Form, and the Stray Dogs Activity Form. According to the findings obtained from the study, the students usually made decisions in situations concerning themselves, consulted their families and relatives while making a decision and when they faced a decision making situation, they had difficulty determining the problem, determining/evaluating the options, determining/evaluating the criteria and making a decision. According to the data acquired from the social studies teacher, decision making skill of the students varied according to their personal characteristics, experiences and readiness. It can be inferred from the results that teachers in the field of social studies are aware of the importance of decision making itself as a skill and including this important skill in the curriculum.
