Kent kimliğinin şekillenme sürecindeki değişimler kenti paylaşan bireylerin kentlilik bilinçleri ile ilişkili olarak gelişmektedir. Bu bağlamda örnek bir durum incelemesi olarak Balıkesir kentiyle birlikte kuruluşundan bu yana çeyrek asırdan fazla bir zaman dilimi geçmişi olan Balıkesir Üniversitesi incelenmiştir. Bu ilişkinin karşılaştırmalı olarak açıklanabilmesi için 386 yerel halk ve 386 üniversite öğrencisi olmak üzere toplam 772 kişi ile anket çalışması yapılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında yerel halk ve üniversiteli öğrenciler arasında sosyokültürel beklentiler açısından görüş farklılıklarının olduğu belirlenmiştir. Her iki gruba ait katılımcıların ortak görüşü ise Balıkesir kent merkezindeki en önemli eksikliğin iki grubun birlikte zaman geçireceği mekânların yetersizliği üzerinedir. Yine her iki grupta yer alan katılımcıların Balıkesir Üniversitesi hakkındaki düşünceleri genel anlamda olumludur, ancak üniversitenin yeterince gelişmemiş olduğu konusunda her iki grup da hemfikirdirler. Her iki grup da kentte veya üniversite de gerçekleşen sosyokültürel aktiviteleri sayıca yetersiz görmektedirler. Sonuç olarak Balıkesir kentinde yerel halk ve üniversite öğrencilerinin kent-üniversite algılarında farklılıklar olduğu belirlenmiştir. Balıkesir kent kimliğinin gelişimine katkı sağlayacak şekilde, üniversite göz önüne alınarak, üniversitedeki bilimsel, sosyal ve kültürel etkinliklerin arttırılması ve bu etkinliklerin öğrenci ve yerel halkı kapsayacak şekilde planlanması gerekmektedir. Çünkü aynı kenti paylaşan toplulukların birbirlerinden haberdar olmayacak şekilde gündelik yaşamlarını devam ettirmelerinin uzun vadede sürdürülebilir olmayacağı aşikârdır.
Changes in the process of shaping the city identity develop in relation to the urban awareness of the individuals who share the city. In this context, the Fisherman University, which has been studied as an example of a situation study with the Fisherman City since its establishment, has had more than a quarter of a century of time history. The survey was conducted with a total of 772 people, including 386 local citizens and 386 university students, to compare this relationship. In the study, there were differences in views between local people and university students in terms of socio-cultural expectations. The common view of the participants of both groups is that the most important lack in the center of the city is the lack of places where the two groups will spend time together. Again, the opinions of participants in both groups about the University of Fisheries are generally positive, but both groups agree that the university is not sufficiently developed. Both groups see the number of social and cultural activities that take place in the city or university as insufficient. As a result, it has been determined that local people and university students in the city-university perceptions differ. In order to contribute to the development of fishing city identity, it is necessary to increase the scientific, social and cultural activities in the university, taking into account the university, and to plan these activities in such a way that will cover students and the local people. For it is clear that the communities that share the same city will not be sustainable in the long run to continue their daily lives in a way that they will not be aware of each other.

The common opinion of the participants of both groups is that the most important deficiency in Balıkesir city center is the lack of places where the two groups will spend time together. Again, the opinions of the participants in both groups about Balıkesir University are generally positive, but both groups agree that the university is not sufficiently developed. Both groups view sociocultural activities in the city or in the university as insufficient in number. As a result, it was determined that there were differences in urban-university perceptions of local residents and university students in Balıkesir. In order to contribute to the development of Balıkesir City identity, scientific, social and cultural activities in the university should be increased by considering the University and these activities should be planned to include students and local people. Because it is obvious that it will not be sustainable in the long term for communities sharing the same city to continue their daily lives in a way that they are not aware of each other.
