Abstract This essay is a self-reflective text about the social function of the school and the physical education teacher from questions that arose throughout the teaching practice. Understanding education as a process with ways to raise the awareness of students, I seek to align expectations between the role of the school institution, the role of physical education teacher and my practice as a social subject. Considering the role of the teacher in the school institution, I present crossings that converged so that my practice is supported in a horizontal relationship with the students so that they can be protagonists, subjects of the construction of their knowledge and have an expanded view of their reality, thus seeking a liberating education.
