The concept of human rights, which has great importance in legal and political area, needs regional recognition and protection despite the claim of universal character. African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (Banjul Charter), which is a regional protection mechanism, has been examined in this study. In addition to introducing the general characteristics of the Charter, it is mainly aimed to display its similarities and differences with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). In this respect, first of all the general information about the African human rights system and the rights in the charter will be introduced. After that, the comparison of the charter and convention shall be made in two parts in relation to the form and the content. In addition to formal and contextual comparisons, comparisons of sanctions mechanisms will be mentioned in order to ensure the integrity of the study. In this way the determination of the place and value of the Banjul Charter in relation to the ECHR will be ensured.
