Abstract:

Goal: Gastroenteritis is a common clinical condition in childhood and childhood. According to the report, 17% of deaths in children under the age of five are caused by diarrhoea. 70% of cases of acute gastroenteritis in this age group are viruses. Rotavirus is the most common viral agent. The study aimed at determining the frequency of rotavirus in children patients who apply for diarrhea to the Erzincan Mengücek Gazi Education and Research Hospital. The output sample results of 7851 patients scaned for rotavirus antigen between January 2013 and December 2016 were evaluated as retrospective. During these periods, the presence of Rotavirus antigen has been studied in fresh output samples by immunochromatographic method. Results: 4416 (56%) of the patients taking the extract samples were male, 3435 (44) girls, and 820 (10.44) rotavirus antigen positivity was detected. Rotavirus positivity is most often observed in the 2-5-year-olds in winter and spring seasons. Rotavirus infections still maintain their importance for public health and cause seasonal epidemics. Especially in the age range of 2-5 years of age, it is necessary to review the introduction of the rotavirus vaccine into the national vaccine program.
