Omega fatty acids, which are an important component of the diet, are widely known as omega-3, omega-6, omega-9. The richest nutrient sources of omega fatty acids are vegetable oils and fish oils. Omega-3 and omega-6 are essential fatty acids that must be taken from the outside. The main omega-3, α-linolenic acid (ALA) is vegetable; eikosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and dokosaheksaenoic acid (DHA) are abundant in fish. The seeds of the plants, and especially the hard-corn fruits, such as nuts, coconut, are the main sources of omega fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids primarily have positive effects and are used in many diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cognitive functions, metabolic disorders, inflammatory diseases, oxidative stress, skin disorders, eye diseases, psychiatric disorders and Alzheimer’s. It is also known that they play an effective role in the development of the fetus. The omega-6/omega-3 levels should be low to see beneficial health effects. The mechanism of many of its biological effects has not yet been fully illuminated. This article aims to aggregate general information about important omega fatty acids, the plant resources they have, their biological effects and their uses.
