Abstract:

Abstract Aim: The research was conducted to determine the relationship between the anxiety levels and social support of patients' relatives in the neurosurgery intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: The sample of this research consists of 250 relatives of patients receiving inpatient treatment in the neurosurgery intensive care unit of a university hospital. Data were collected using the "Personal Information Form (KBF)", "Beck Anxiety Scale (BAS)" and "Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale (MSPSS)". Shapiro Wilk test, mean, standard deviation, median and quartile values, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test and Conover test were used to analyze the data. Results: It was determined that the mean scores of the perceived social support level of the patients' relatives in the Neurosurgery ICU increased and the mean scores of the anxiety level decreased. It was determined that there was a negative, low-strength and significant relationship between the MSPSDS subscales and total score of the patient's relatives and the BAI total score (p<0.01). Concluson: It is recommended that nurses organize training for relatives of patients in the ICU on ways to cope with anxiety, to activate social support systems and to provide necessary training on how to benefit from these social support systems.
