Abstract:

Developing technology with the Industrial Revolution; provided the transition from human power to machine power in production activities. This radical transformation in production spread all over the world in a short time and greatly affected the economic and social structure of the countries. Industrial activities, which started to develop rapidly in the cities, provided employment for the unemployed people living in the countryside and brought migration from the countryside to the city. Although Istanbul is the city where this process is most clearly observed in our country, there has been a rapid increase in the population of Istanbul after the 1950s due to immigration. The inability to meet the needs arising from the rapid population growth in a planned manner has adversely affected the spatial development of the city. After the 1950s, the planning process was started in Istanbul and it was aimed to achieve growth in a controlled manner. The most important issue stated in the plans; is that Istanbul should develop on an east-west axis in the south direction. Forest areas, agricultural areas and water basins in the north were determined as areas to be avoided, but projects made with private initiatives, government support and local government decisions paved the way for the city to grow in the north. This growth has caused some environmental, social and economic effects throughout the city. The aim of this study; to carry out the sustainable performance analysis of 12 projects implemented in the growth process in the northwestern direction of the city. In the study method, the literature review was made by examining the publications with important indexes on the subject, the projects to be discussed and sustainable development criteria were determined as a result of the scanning. In line with the determined environmental, social and economic criteria, the sustainability performance of growth was analyzed as a result of interviews with people who have the necessary equipment. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the most economic development was achieved with 60.60% success in this growth; with a performance rate of 57.72% of social development, which is close to the average; On the other hand, it was observed that environmental development remained below the average value with a performance rate of 36.27% due to the damage to the natural environment. As a result, the importance of keeping growth under control and correct and rational planning for sustainable urban growth has been revealed.
