Abstract:

The Tanzimat Edict and the ensuing innovations brought about a transformation in the Ottoman Empire, especially in İstanbul, and found a response in all Anatolian cities. As a result, new types of spaces were needed. When the differentiation of social life, cities and ideology is wanted to be read through space, one of the leading building types needed is the government house. The aim of this study is to understand what the dynamics of the late Ottoman period were, to question the unity of style during the period, how Istanbul-based transformations existed in the regions covering the geography of today's Turkey, and to look at what can be said in addition to the architectural elements of government houses and their relations with the city. Certainly, the mentioned changes and construction processes were also met after the proclamation of the Republic, government houses were rebuilt or repaired and continued to be used. Within the content of this study, the dynamics of the period when the building type first emerged were examined by taking the process up to the Republic. Since the process from the Tanzimat to the present is a long and multi-input process, which will complicate the analysis, the date range of the study has been limited. In order to understand how the transformations in the Ottoman Empire after the Tanzimat and the effects of westernization were reflected in other areas of Anatolia apart from Istanbul, the geographical scope of the study was limited and only the government houses of the Ottoman Empire that were within the borders of Republic of Turkey were discussed. With the samples taken from seven regions within these borders, it has been tried to analyze whether different inputs depending on the regions created their own effects.
