Abstract:

Abstract:

There are two languages of students in Turkey that are different from their native language. These students can freely use their native languages in their daily lives. However, in the course of education, when they meet with education in the mother tongue (Turkish), they often get difficult. It is necessary to note that a number of problems arise as a result of the difficulties experienced. We can say that the problems seen in two-language students are focused around reading. In such a situation, the concern of two-language students becomes inevitable. The aim of this study is to study whether the reading concerns of secondary school students in two languages, 5, 6, 7 and 8 classes, which differ from the mother tongue language, differ according to gender, class level and socio-economic level variables. The study included 325 students of two languages (women 146, men 179) from the schools chosen by measurement sampling method from the province of Van. The study used the 'Reading Anxiety Scale' developed by Çeliktürk and Yamaç (2015) to determine the reading concerns of two-language high school students. According to the results of the study, Cronbach’s alpha ratio was 0.95, calculated in relation to the whole of the Student’s Reading Anxiety Scale. The findings obtained at the end of the study showed that the levels of anxiety towards reading for girls and boys students were similar. The result was that the students of the fifth class were at a lower level of worry about reading. As the class level rises, the level of reading anxiety in two-language students also rises. It is also the result of the poor socio-economic level that the students' worries about reading are also quite high.
