Abstract:

Scope: Those with schizophrenia are at risk of osteoporosis (OP) and broken due to their lifestyle. This study aims to compare the levels of osteopontin (OPN), which plays an important role in the bone cycle and contributes to the osteoporosis process, in patients with schizophrenia and in the control group. Tools and Methods: This study was formed from patients who apply to the Ataturk University Research Hospital from June 2019 to September 2019 and/or patients who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia between the ages of 18 and 65 who agree to participate in the study, who have not had a trauma and deformity history for at least 2 months, and control group from people who have not had a psychiatric, trauma and deformity history, between the ages of 18 and 65 years, similar to the patient group and in terms of age, gender and educational status. The number of samples identified in the Power analysis using the G*Power3.1 program was 110 people (control: 55, patient: 55) in total. In serum samples taken from each of the patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, osteopontin levels were measured by the ELISA method. Results: When the Serum OPN levels of the control and patient group were studied, a statistically significant difference between the two groups was not found. Result: Our study also found the OPN levels similar in schizophrenia patients and in the healthy control group. We think that when OP is common in schizophrenia, different mechanisms may have an effect than OPN.
