ABSTRACT Aim: This study aims to investigate the effect of disease perception on self-care power in gynecologic cancer patients. Material-Method: This cross-sectional was conducted on n = 260 gynecologic cancer patients who were admitted to the Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit and Inpatient Clinics of the Medical Oncology Hospital of a state university hospital between July 2018 and April 2019. Data were collected with the Personal Information Form prepared by the researcher according to the literature, The Disease Perception Questionnaire Brief (IPQ-B) and The Self-Care Agency Scale (SCAS). Results: The average age of [1]the patients with gynecological cancer was 50.0±8.7, and 53.1% of them had a chronic disease. It was determined that 38. 8% of patients with gynecologic cancer had endometrial cancer, 36.5% had ovarian cancer, 21.9% had cervical cancer, and 55.0% had gynecological cancer metastasis. The average score of Brief Disease Perception Scale of the patients with gynecologic cancer was 50.59±10.22 and the average score of Self-Care Power Scale was 111.25±32.98. There was a statistically significant relationship between Short Disease Perception Scale and Self-Care Power Scale of gynecologic cancer patients. Conclusions: As the positive perception of disease increases in gynecologic cancer patients, self-care power increases. Nurses responsible for the care of patients with gynecological cancer who have high negative beliefs due to disease outcome, personal control, benefit of treatment, symptom severity, anxiety, level of understanding of the disease, emotional state, should develop positive disease perception towards increasing self-care of individuals. Key words: Gynecological Cancer, Disease Perception, Self-Care Agency
