Akademisyenlerin Instagram Kullanım Alışkanlıkları Üzerine Bir Araştırma

Dijital çağda hızla gelişim gösteren sosyal medya araçları ve yeni iletişim teknolojileri ile birlikte insanlar yeni deneyimler ve alışkanlıklar kazanmaktadırlar. Görsel açıdan zengin ve farklı bir yapıya sahip olan sosyal medya aracı olarak Instagram da kuruluşundan kısa bir süre sonra popüler olmuş ve fotoğraf -video paylaşım platformu haline gelmiştir. Ayrıca Instagram, kullanıcıların sosyal medyada görünür olma ve beğenilme arzularını da harekete geçirmektedir.  Kullanıcılar açısından Instagram, belgeleme, takip etme, yaşadığı anı, zevkleri ve duygularını diğer insanlarla paylaşma, reklam ve satışa yönelik ticari amaçlar,  etkileşim ve topluluk oluşturma ve diğer kullanıcıların paylaşımlarını görme gibi birçok amaca hizmet etmektedir. Bu çalışmada, Instagram kullanan akademisyenlerin bu sosyal medya platformunu kullanma nedenleri, kullanma sıklıkları, amaçları ve paylaşımlarının içeriklerinin nasıl olduğuna dair tespitlerin yapılması amaçlanmaktadır. Bu bağlamda amaçsal örnekleme yöntemi kullanılarak seçilen Gümüşhane Üniversitesi ve Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi’nde çalışan akademisyenler üzerinde yüz yüze anket uygulanmıştır. Verilerin analizi için betimleyici istatistik, ortalama ve çapraz tablo analizleri kullanılmıştır.  Yapılan araştırma sonucunda akademisyenlerin daha çok kendileri, arkadaşları, aile üyeleri ve diğer insanlarla beraber yer aldıkları fotoğrafları ve ziyaret ettikleri yerlerin fotoğraflarını Instagram’da paylaşmayı tercih ettikleri belirlenmiştir. Akademisyenlerin Instagram’ı akademik ve bilimsel bilgi edinme amaçlı olarak çok az kullandıkları görülmektedir. Bunun yanında akademisyenlerin Instagram’ı daha çok, fotoğraf ve video paylaşımı, gündemi takip etmek ve boş zaman değerlendirmek amacıyla kullandıkları bu araştırma sonucunda tespit edilmiştir. Bu da ilgili sosyal ağın bilimsel düzeyden ziyade sosyal bir ihtiyacı karşılama görevini yerine getirdiğini ortaya koymaktadır.

With the rapidly evolving social media tools and new communication technologies in the digital age, people gain new experiences and habits. As a social media tool that is visually rich and has a different structure, Instagram has become popular shortly after its establishment and has become a photo-video sharing platform. In addition, Instagram also activates users’ desires to be visible and liked on social media.  In terms of users, Instagram serves many purposes such as documenting, tracking, sharing the moments, pleasures and feelings they live with others, advertising and sales for commercial purposes, interaction and community creation, and seeing the sharing of other users. This study aims to identify the reasons for academics using Instagram to use this social media platform, frequency of use, purposes and how the content of their posts is. In this context, face-to-face surveys have been applied on academics working at the Silverhane University and the Republic University, which have been selected using the purpose sample method. Imaging statistics, average and cross-table analysis were used for data analysis.  The research found that academics prefer to share photos of themselves, their friends, family members and other people and the places they visit on Instagram. It appears that very few academics use Instagram for academic and scientific purposes. Additionally, the research has found that academics use Instagram more to share photos and videos, to follow the agenda and to evaluate their leisure time. This also demonstrates that the relevant social network is fulfilling the task of meeting a social need rather than a scientific level.

People gain experiences and practices with social media tools and new communication technologies which make progrress in digital era. Instagram as a social media tool which has a rich and a different visual structure has become popular shortly after its foundation and it has become a platform of sharing photos-videos.  Besides, Instagram activates the users’ desires about visibility on social media and being liked. Instagram serves a lot of purposes as documentation, following, sharing the moment, tastes and feelings with other people, commercial purposes, creating interaction and society and seeing the sharings of other users. It is aimed in this study that the determinations about the reasons, frequencies, purposes of using this social media platform by academicians and the contents of sharings are made. Within this context, a face to face questionnaire was conducted with the academicians who work in Gümüşhane University and Cumhuriyet University by using the objective sample method. Descriptive statistics, mean and cross-tabulation analyzes were used analyze the data. In consequence of the questionnaire  conducted, the academicians prefer sharing their photos, the photos in which they are with their friends, family members and the other people and the photos of the places and locations visited on Instagram. It has been found that academicians rarely use Instagram for academic and scientific information. On the other hand, according to research results academicians use Instagram to share photos and videos, follow up the agenda and spend their leisure time. These results reveal that the related social network fulfills social needs rather than scientific needs
