Abstract:

Today, the phenomenon of terrorism appears in every aspect of life. Undoubtedly, globalization and the communication revolution have had a major impact on the increase in this visibility. It is clear that these changes in the communication age also affected the media. In this regard, the media has faced an important dilemma today. While the media informs people about the developments by using the opportunities provided by the technologies of communication, it also has to prevent this from turning into an important propaganda tool in the news of terrorist incidents. In this regard, the way in which terrorist incidents are reported is an important issue that needs to be addressed in the context of the terrorist-media relationship. While the study examines how a terrorist attack takes place in different newspapers, it tries to find out whether the ideological positions of the newspapers have any effect on the news content and theme distributions. For this, the "Reina Attack" carried out by DEAŞ in Istanbul was selected as a case study. In this context, how the terrorist attack that took place in Sabah, Yeni Akit, Cumhuriyet, Sözcü and BirGün newspapers were examined through the contact distributions of the news and content analysis was carried out. As a result of the investigation, it was concluded that variables such as the terrorist who carried out the attack, being a DAESH militant, being a foreign person, and arranging the attack for New Year's celebrations were important in terms of news themes and news analysis. Nevertheless, the place where the newspapers position themselves in the ideological spectrum affects the contact distribution of the news and the main debates; The newspapers, which are in a different position in the ideological spectrum, appear to be united in condemning terrorism. In addition, it was clearly seen that the newspapers differed in terms of the axis of discussion and the chosen themes.
