İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonlarında ve savaşın hemen bittiği yıllarda geçen Necîb Mahfûz’a ait Midak Sokağı (Zuḳâḳu’l-Midaḳḳ) 1947’de, 1950’li yıllarda geçen Halide Edip Adıvar’a ait Âkile Hanım Sokağı ise 1957’de basılmıştır. Kültürel olarak birbirine benzeyen Türk ve Arap toplumunda yaklaşık aynı tarihlerde yaşanan toplumsal değişim her iki romanda da bir sokak üzerinden yansıtılmaktadır. Necîb Mahfûz, romanında Kahire’nin eski bir semtinde yer alan Midak Sokağı’nda yaşayan farklı tabakadaki karakterlerin yaşamları aracılığıyla İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası modernleşme ve materyalist hayat düzeninin getirdiği toplumsal sorunları okuyucuya sunmaktadır. Halide Edip Adıvar, eserinde hayatları Âkile Hanım Sokağı’nda kesişen toplumun farklı kesimlerine ait karakterler aracılığıyla modernleşme ve Amerikan yaşam tarzına özenti ile oluşan manevi bozulmaları ortaya koyarken eğitim ile karakteri sağlam inşa edilmiş milli değerlerine bağlı münevver Türk erkeği ve kadınını idealize etmektedir. Bu çalışmada iki romanın modernleşme, ahlaki değerlerin bozulması, din, sınıf ayırımı, siyaset, karı-koca arasındaki ilişkiler ve kadınların çalışması temaları açısından bir karşılaştırılması yapılmıştır.
The Midak Street of Necîb Mahfûz (Zuḳâḳu'l-Midaḳḳ) which passed at the end of the Second World War and in the years of the war immediately ended was printed in 1947 and the Âkile Lady Street of Halide Edip Adıvar which passed in the 1950s was printed in 1957. The social change in the Turkish and Arab society, which is culturally similar to each other, is reflected in both novels on a street. Necîb Mahfûz in his novel presents to the reader the social problems brought by modernization after World War II and materialist lifestyle through the lives of characters of different layers living in Midak Street, located in an ancient district of Cairo. Halide Edip Adıvar in his work reveals the spiritual disturbances formed by modernization and care for American lifestyle through the characters of the different sections of society that cross their lives in the Âkile Lady Street, while educating and charactering strongly built national values, idealizes the Mnevver Turkish man and woman. In this study, a comparison of the two novels was made in terms of modernization, the deterioration of moral values, religion, class separation, politics, relationships between husband and wife and the work of women.
Najib Mahfuz’s Midaq Alley which refers to the period of later Second World War and right after it was published in 1947 and Halide Edip Adıvar’s Akile Hanım Street which refers to the period of 1950s was published in 1957. Social changes occurred approximately on the same dates in Turkish and Arab cultures which resemble one another are reflected in both novels through a street. Najib Mahfuz, in his novel presents the social problems brought by modernization and the materialist way of life via the lives of the characters living in Midaq Alley where locates in an old district of Cairo. While Halide Edip Adıvar, in her novel reveals the demoralization resulted from modernization and the imitation of American life style via the characters belong to different parts of society whose lives come across at Akile Hanım Street, she idealizes enlightened and tradition-bound Turkish man and woman whose characters are constructed solid by education. In this study a comparison of these two novels in consideration of the themes of modernization, demoralization, religion, social classification, politics, relations between wife-husband and employment of women was made.
