Abstract:

The earth, in addition to its vital importance, is to come at the forefront of the elements that make man self-dependent in economic and cultural terms. The trade relations that are formed as a result of land-related production, increasing economic activities and creating alternative living spaces for rural life, have prepared the ground for the construction of today’s cities. Thus, the city and rural areas are divided on the geography both cultural and economic. All these processes of socialization have also formed social classes and the possessed land has played an important role in the formation of states as a value to be protected. The feudal system that dominated the Middle Ages in Europe also emerged in this direction. The whole burden of the feudal system, which dominated the Middle Ages, economically dependent on land, was taken over by the peasants and land workers. But, despite this burden, the peasants were underestimated by aristocracy and by the bourgeoisie in terms of the social class and made it invisible in the field of art. As the French Revolution began in 1789, class conflicts occurred in the countryside, and the impact of all the processes reflected in the field of art. The realism flow appeared as a result of these processes. François Millet, the pioneer of realism, made a revolutionary outcome in terms of the topics he dealt with. The artist, who has the difficult life of the peasant and land worker, which the history of art has made invisible for centuries, has placed the fact that the history of art has experienced in the face of the idealized lives. The aim of this study is to address the work of François Nation in the context of land and labour, along with the historical conditions of the period, and to conduct an analysis of the work in this direction.
